Teaching Specialization...
I specialize in working with beginning and seasoned adults, children and young cellist ages 10 and up, as well as cellists of all ages interested in pursuing new directions, modern and popular styles of cello playing and improvisation. With an
emphasis
on the development of proper technique through the study of the traditional repertoire
I also offer a safe and encouraging environment in which to nurture creativity and to develop the skills needed to improvise and explore the instrument beyond it's classical roots. I am passionate about the progress of the cello through new directions and through the broadening of the cello repertoire. As a composer and improvising cellist I am often inspired by music from film, romantic and present day composers as well as all kinds of jazz and new music.

Freedom and Imagination...
I encourage all my students to discover their own personal connection with their instrument. Just as each instrument is unique, so is each student. It is my role as a teacher to respect and understand each student's strengths and weaknesses allowing me to develop a personalized method that best suits you. It is very important with the cello that technique is addressed first and foremost. String instruments require careful focus on technique to produce the tone quality desired and to move freely and efficiently around the instrument. Once proper technique is aquired it is possible to begin to realize your own artistic potential, enabling you to begin exploring your creativity, connect with your own musical intuition and imagination, improvise and freely create your own music enabling you to create the sounds and express the emotions desired.
In this way the cello becomes a place for creative exploration and is less limited by some academic environments whose focus may weigh more heavily and or soley on the traditional approach. Click here to read more...
“Your only prerequisites are to have an open mind, be prepared to think off of the page, and be ready to be inspired, empowered, and to explore the cello, your creativity and imagination beyond your wildest dreams."
-Shaun Paul
